I'm just a parent, but I know there are natural ways to nourish our children as they go through their bout with cancer. My goal with this blog is to give parents the information that their oncologists may not know or give them so they have the information at their fingertips when they need it. There may not be a natural way to cure cancer (but my view of that is changing!), but I believe there can be a strong "synergy" of anti-cancer foods and supplements that have the ability to make modern medical treatment more effective and at the very least extend lives. My diet philosophy is of whole foods and a whole foods based diet. Whole foods nourish the body as a whole, strengthen the immune system and in turn help it to fight cancer. This is a collection of my personal and ongoing research that started when my daughter was diagnosed with AT/RT brain cancer.

Amazing Visual! How Acetaldehyde Inflames, Cripples and KILLS.

Instant Read Thermometer-Room Temp.
If this doesn't put things in perspective for people, I don't think anything will. Layla was blessed with genetics from a certain family member(of whom I will keep anonymous) that causes her spine to be very close to the surface of her skin. I also believe she is unique in the fact that she is completely missing the gene to breakdown milk lactose and proteins which cause a direct conversion to acetaldehyde, just as if she had been drinking wine, hard liquor, or any alcoholic drink for that matter. This is very similar to asians and middle easterners who cannot tolerate non-fermented dairy and even have reactions to alcoholic drinks. Again, I believe the Lord put Layla and our family in this situation for a reason as many things continue to come together as I learn more and more about this deadly disease.

 Portrait of a Killer

4/21/2011-Overall Body Temperature 98.2 as Tested From Forehead

Pictured above is Layla's back. The center of the 3 red vertebra is where one of her 3 spinal tumors are. I had a hunch after seeing this redness and learning about acetaldehyde that it should be cooler than other areas of the body. Also, her entire body temp, just 3-4 weeks ago, hung between 96.5 and 97.0 on average. She was red from head to toe for 5 days once the MSM/Organic sulfur built up to a high enough level in her bloodstream so I had a good idea what was happening in this area of her back. This area also seems redder after her meals/supplements. However, before starting MSM/sulfur, I had always assumed that the chemo or radiation had damaged her thyroid which led to her low body temperatures. I had brought her overall temps up using very low dose iodine (75-150mcg) last year after her treatment, but never went above that amount. I didn't bring the iodine with me to her menningial infection hospitalization and also postponed it during her experimental chemo with what I know now was probably an unfounded fear of a bad reaction and a bad idea. So I decided to take her quick read thermometer and take readings in different areas of her back. They were all over the place to begin with as she had been sitting against me. As she laid on her belly for a minute or two, the reading starting leveling out and became consistent. It was as I expected. The tumor, even though shrinking and hopefully dying is pumping out this toxic acetaldehyde. The acetaldehyde is reacting with everything I am supplementing her with causing the redness and minor inflammation in this area. Most reactions have heat as a byproduct which helps maintain this area closer to normal body temperature, plus the reduction in the overall amount of the alcohol allow her normal immune system enzymes to be active against the tumor.

Going Into Shock
Have you ever poured rubbing alcohol on your hand? It's pretty cold isn't it? I recently learned this cooling effect in the body is due the acetaldehyde alcohol sucking in oxygen from air and your tissues as it oxidizes away into the air. Now imagine this alcohol being localized inside your body, being continuously produced by a tumor or other inflammation. This alcohol will continue to do the same thing in the body, which is lower the temperature, effectively turning off any immune system stimulating enzymes and stealing oxygen from surround tissues as it is broken down inside the body. Think about what hypothermia does. Hypothermia shuts down the body's processes, causing you to go into shock, this is no different- albeit typically in a localized area of the body unless the cancer has metastasized.

Cancer is a Result of Inflammation
This from wikipedia "Prolonged inflammation, known as chronic inflammation, leads to a progressive shift in the type of cells present at the site of inflammation and is characterized by simultaneous destruction and healing of the tissue from the inflammatory process."
I will send you back to read my Anti-Cancer Manifesto as to my feelings on current modern cancer treatment regarding this very topic.

Your body is trained and able to handle short term problems and infections in the body. It is when the offending substance or infection is persistent that immune processes begin to break down. The specific substance we are talking about, acetaldehyde, is a normal byproduct in lactic acid fermentation that is used to fuel muscles when pushed to extremes or exhaustion. In a short quick burst of the legs and arms some of this alcohol is produced, but quickly dealt with by the body and actually one of the reasons you are able get "pumped" after a workout. The problem comes from it's persistence in an area due to toxin build-up and that leads to chronic inflammation, which leads to a more acidic environment. This acidic environment forces the cells to become lactic acid fermenters to survive and in turn produces this nasty acetaldehyde. The cycle continues as more oxygen is pulled away which leads to more acidity, and then with this vicious cycle you have cancer. It doesn't matter the name, type, area, carcinoma, sarcoma, glioma, rhaboid, AT/RT, etc. , some portion of the tumor will be burning glucose and another portion using the resulting lactate for fuel to grow. This workout analogy reminds me of a good friend and golf buddy of mine who used to walk 18 holes of golf and then still go and run several miles, many times per week. He was in his early 60's if I believe. This was 4-5 years ago when antioxidants and free radicals were the buzzwords in the health industry. Of course, if you know me, I was discussing it on the golf course. I told him if he was going to do that much running to make sure he gets plenty of antioxidants to take care of the free radicals (with the most dangerous acetaldehyde) that he would generate from all of the exercise. But he was an ex-military tough guy with a deep voice and he would just shrug and said he didn't need all of that stuff. Well, one year later he developed brain cancer and soon after passed away. He was a great friend and honorable man and I will miss his company.

Crippling, Paralysis and Physical Degeneration from Acetaldehyde
You can imagine if this alcohol stays in one place for very long it could do some real damage. No oxygen means death to most cells, including nerves, organs, bones, or any part of the body. It is also known to block acetylcholine receptors in the brain and interfere with the function of red blood cells. Acetaldehyde has a very sticky and magnetic personality. It attaches to any and everything nearby including red blood cells, enzymes, DNA, RNA, proteins, the liver, fats, you name it, it basically bonds with it and wreaks havoc on your system. This is where nutrition and genetics come into play. If your body has adequate nutritional co-factors to break down the acetaldehyde in a particular area of the body, then little to no harm is done, the cells repair themselves and life moves on. However, when there are nutritional deficiencies is where problems occur. This occasion is where I believe genetics play a big role, without sufficient ammo to metabolize the alcohol your cells have a choice, commit suicide, trigger an inflammatory response to call in the calvary(if even the second line of defense is available) or it can choose to go rogue or "go with the flow" by converting to a low or no oxygen, lactic acid burning, cancerous cell. This is a great explanation as to why some patients experience metastization and some don't. "Normal stem cells check how they are doing. If there are too many gene alterations, they commit suicide. Cancer cells and CSC don’t look at DNA damage. They keep dividing despite mutation after mutation"http://cancergrace.org/hnscc/2010/06/01/head-and-neck-cancer-stem-cells-2/

How Acetaldehyde KILLS
If the poisonous chemo doesn't kill you first or you are unable to finish chemotherapy treatment and decide to fend for yourself with an even more inflammation and metabolite producing drug-Morphine, this acetaldehyde slowly takes over your body and shuts down important systems required for life. If you didn't have enough tumors pumping out this toxin, without adequate nutritional support, you soon will. This alcohol will spread throughout your body, using up resources where ever it can, revealing any weaknesses you have. If it finds a weakness, it will exploit it. When smothered, de-oxygenated tissue will more than likely become cancerous as well, leading to more tumors. This is why you hear that cancers have spread to the bones or lymph nodes. Red blood cells and the lymph system have a steady flow in the body, perfect carriers of acetaldehyde. If not already in the central nervous system, it soon will be as it easily crosses the blood/brain barrier. As it builds up in the brain, it blocks important receptors, including those that control the involuntary muscle system which includes breathing and the heart. If the cancer is in or near or liver or pancreas it wreaks havoc on all of your toxin removal and metabolic systems, which are like the military pentagon when it comes to fighting cancer. Take out the central command and you quickly perish. Ignorance, Stupidity, or Criminal Negligence?
Notice nowhere in this article did I say cancer kills. Using the word "cancer" is too vague of a term as it makes the disease seem to far out of reach for the average person to understand. It is not a foreign invader, it is a damaged part of your body that needs to heal. You also can't attack a vague "cancer", without knowing what you are up against, how do you mount an attack or a defense? It is blatantly clear to me what causes the breakdown in the human body that leads to a cancerous state as well as the continuation of this degeneration once cancerous cells start to multiply.

If this is so obvious to an armchair quarterback parent, you know it has to be to medical researchers and pharmaceutical companies. The problem is, how do you take relatively cheap supplements, nutrients and foods and pass them through the multi-million dollar FDA approval process and still make a profit in the end? Very simple, you don't. BUT, this should not stop what I call "good doctoring". In the old days, doctors did what they knew was right. They knew fevers helped you heal, they knew a baby needed to be in the sun after it was born, they knew iodine could heal and fix deficiency, some used IV vitamin C, and most of all, I believe they used common sense. Why was it better back then? Because there were no pharmaceutical reps. I could write a book on how the pharmaceutical industry, along with the insurance companies, have hi-jacked modern medicine, but this is not the focus of this post.

One evening in the hospital I told one of the oncologists, "Don't stop learning, I don't understand why when you get out of medical school, you just stop learning?" He really didn't respond. I told him I constantly seek out new information and am open minded about new things vs. the old way of thinking. It seems to be the status quo in medicine. Thinking this oncologist was more open minded than others due to some conversations, while in the hallway I mentioned a website greenmedinfo.com to him when he was with another doctor. He honestly got embarrassed in front of the other doctor and put his head down as if to half way ignore me.

Things Must Change For The Children
There needs to be therapeutic nutritional support and treatment options for children. The acetaldehyde issue is one that must be addressed. Never should a child be sent home with morphine or to a hospice care and told there is nothing else that can be done. IT IS A LIE. There are many treatments still available, many of which even if they did not save the child's life, would definitely extend their life and give them a quality of life they would not otherwise have had. If you have been there like we have, you know every hour and every day is precious. I don't doubt any parent that has lost a child would not have wanted just one more hour and one more day with them. Fine, if the doctors only want to prescribe drugs and ignore basic biology and chemistry that they should have learned in medical school, then the dietitians & nutritionists should be knowledgeable enough to use vitamins, minerals, and supplements to give additional treatment for these children. I say this flippantly as most dietitians are either clueless or bound by the bogus food pyramid and doctors SHOULD be giving these alternatives. Hopefully, by me putting this information out there, some independent research organization or foundation will take what I continue to preach seriously and put it to good use for the children. In my opinion, cancer is still primarily just a vitamin C, D, sulfur and iodine deficiency disease and I will continue to preach it until proven otherwise.

“The doctor of the future will no longer treat the human frame
with drugs, but rather will cure and prevent disease with nutrition.”

It has been proven that taking oral vitamin D along with Vitamin D from the sun has proven to be most beneficial. Could it be the ultra-violet light from the sun breaking down the acetaldehyde that makes the sun so important? Also, remember acetic acid is poison to tumors. If so, I propose a bilirubin type UV blanket or "billiblanket" that is used for newborns be used along with any treatment and should be highly effective for localized tumors near the skin.-Weldon W.

AHA, There's that oxygen thing again, remember vitamin C-->Hydrogen Peroxide-->Iodine= Oxygen! -Weldon W.

"Opiates, such as morphine, produce metabolites when they are broken down within the body. These metabolites can build up in the body and cause symptoms of opiate toxicity. Opiate toxicity is essentially an overdose of an opiate leading to poisonous levels in the body and causes symptoms such as restlessness, hallucinations, tremors and lethargy."

"Many physicians may underappreciate the effects of active metabolites produced from opioid breakdown on both drug efficacy and, more importantly, tolerability. The exact extent to which different pharmacologically active metabolites mediate opioid-associated side effects requires further research. Still, there is considerable evidence that active metabolites do evoke their own side effects, which may be typically attributed to the parent drug. Additionally, pharmacogenetic variability can result in unique differences in patients’ ability to metabolize a drug, especially in those receiving multiple drugs concomitantly, thus impacting drug efficacy and toxicity."
