I'm just a parent, but I know there are natural ways to nourish our children as they go through their bout with cancer. My goal with this blog is to give parents the information that their oncologists may not know or give them so they have the information at their fingertips when they need it. There may not be a natural way to cure cancer (but my view of that is changing!), but I believe there can be a strong "synergy" of anti-cancer foods and supplements that have the ability to make modern medical treatment more effective and at the very least extend lives. My diet philosophy is of whole foods and a whole foods based diet. Whole foods nourish the body as a whole, strengthen the immune system and in turn help it to fight cancer. This is a collection of my personal and ongoing research that started when my daughter was diagnosed with AT/RT brain cancer.

Ketogenic Diet for Cancer-Proof of Sulfur/MSM Efficacy?

Dr. Atkins, Ketogenic Pioneer
Layla has suffered dearly from the time she was born. Born with a genetic condition called Ring 22, she developed an extreme milk allergy, which I know now led to excessive acetaldehyde build-up in her blood stream, causing her to have cancer. I said, as probably all parents in this situation say "Why me Lord?". Why did He place her in our care? I believe I know now. Through Layla's and our family's suffering, I believe many children will be cured or never get cancer in the first place as this information gets out to aspiring and soon-to-be parents. Although it is well known that acetic acid kills tumors, I know I will have to prove that sulfur deficiency is one key factor in the cause of cancer.

A Great Idea, Not Feasible for A Child
I would like to refer you back to an earlier post on my blog about the ketogenic diet and how it is proven to shrink tumors. In essence, you take the glucose away from the tumor it starves, shrinks and hopefully dies. With the ketogenic strategy, you essentially go on a low-carb and fasting type diet. Some can be as severe as water fasting for several days, not feasible for a growing child that needs nutrients not only to fight the cancer, but for normal, healthy growth as well. This has been my problem with regular chemo/radiation treatment as well. If a child is on poisonous chemo for several years, they can't eat properly for proper growth, hence why they have so many health issues later in life, even if they beat the cancer.

One Study Set Off a Light Bulb
I was thinking acetic acid, vinegar? What did I know about vinegar that would help me figure this thing out? I remembered this little study that came through my facebook log last year about how vinegar would clear the glucose from your bloodstream while you slept. I actually did this for awhile until I started getting some mild reflux from it at night. I wondered, could it be that the body uses sugar/glucose to neutralize acetic acid? Got to love Google, not only did I confirm that the body neutralizes acetic acid by combining it with glucose and converting it to glycogen for the muscles, I actually found a study that showed the process by which acetic acid actually blocks the process of glycolosis itself. Glycolosis is the process by which the anaerobic portion of the tumors feed themselves.

How I believe the Ketogenic Diet Works
I believe that by starving the body for glucose, you break the lactic acid cycle by stopping the process precisely at the acetic acid stage, causing an extreme build-up of acetic acid in the body. Without glucose in the bloodstream, the body is unable to break it down. The acetic acid, in turn, blocks glycolosis, causing tumor shrinkage and death. Simple enough. The problem with this strategy is that the body requires glucose for fuel and many essential nutrients in the diet contain carbohydrate, making it nearly impossible to sustain this type of diet over an extended period of time. Even the Atkins diet only requires an extreme cut back on carbs for the first two weeks.

Imitating Ketogenesis
I have found a way to imitate the effect of essentially starving yourself, without having to adjust the diet. You can do it with sulfur/MSM. Within the glycolytic, lactic acid cycle, lactic acid is broken down into acetaldehyde. When MSM/sulfur encounters acetaldehyde it makes acetic acid! MSM/sulfur is a non-toxic substance found in all foods to a certain degree and is water soluble. Any excess can be excreted by the body, but MSM/sulfur has the ability to build up in the body, so you can take more and build the levels up to have greater effect. I have read on forums for some to take as much as a half a cup per day for a short period of time to heal themselves from an arthritic pain. The beauty of MSM/sulfur is that it can be taken to maintain a high level in the body and it can be taken for the rest of your life. Any cancer that has anaerobic features is going to be disrupted by acetic acid and since the sulfur is always there in significant quantity, the tumor will sit in a continuous pool of acetic acid as it tries to complete the lactic acid and glycolytic cycle. Sugar really doesn't affect it as more sugar would make more lactic acid and in turn more acetaldehyde to react with the sulfur. However, it would be prudent if you have cancer to restrict as much sugar as possible to maximize the anti-cancer potential of vitamin D as it seems to work more on the feeding side of the tumor by neutralizing lactic acid itself, however I believe vitamin D is a metabolic stimulator as well helping keep the all the processes going in the body. Because without metabolism of some kind, you have cell death and we don't want that in healthy cells.

Proof of Sulfur Deficiency
Again, I believe that a deficiency in sulfur, due to chemically fertilized and hydroponically grown plants, grain-fed animals, and diets high in processed foods is a leading cause of cancer in children and adults. If adequate sulfur is present in the body, acetic acid would be produced in sufficient amounts to "disinfect" any abnormal cells that were determined to grow anaerobically and become cancerous.

[Nutr Res. 2009 Dec;29(12):846-9.] the researchers, backed up by colleagues from the Kronos Longevity Research Institute, present an alternative explanation. The active ingredient in vinegar and vinegar supplements is acetic acid [structural formula shown above]. In the muscles this acid inhibits the enzyme phosphofructokinase-1 (PFK-1), which is the enzyme that makes the reaction below possible. (Picture Omitted) You’re looking at the first step of the process of glycolysis, the process in which glucose in converted into energy. Fructose-6-phosphate and ATP are converted into fructose 1,6-biophosphate and ADP. If that process is inhibited a bit, then in theory the muscle cells burn more fat and store more glucose as glycogen."

"The effect of vinegar on blood sugar levels is perhaps the best-researched and the most promising of apple cider vinegar's possible health benefits. Several studies have found that vinegar may help lower glucose levels. For instance, one 2007 study of 11 people with type 2 diabetes found that taking two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before bed lowered glucose levels in the morning by 4%-6%."

"A few laboratory studies have found that vinegar may be able to kill cancer cells or slow their growth.  Observational studies of people have been confusing. One found that eating vinegar was associated with a decreased risk of esophageal cancer. "

  1. Have you considered the combination of sodium bicarbonate (Baking Soda) with MSM? Sodium bicarbonate is used by some alternative health practitioners (google Dr. Mark Sircus) as a major way of fighting, and potentially healing, cancer, which he claims is caused by candida overgrowth. If you induce candida die-off with sodium bicarbonate, you will in turn significantly raise acetaldehyde levels in the body. Combine that raise induced by the die-off with MSM, like you talk about here, and you have a significant level of acetic acid being created. You may already be aware of this, I don't know, but I thought your article was really great and I've been doing a lot of research over the past few years and self-testing. I'm a fast-oxidizer and I've been seeking a supplementation that would help me lose weight and many of the symptoms of candida overgrowth (acne, pain, allergies, etc.) Thanks for your post, although it's a few years old now.
